Ronaldo helpless as Portugal & Pepe implode

The Real Madrid star cut a frustrated figure as his team turned in a woeful performance against Germany.

Cristiano Ronaldo is often accused of arrogance but on the eve of Portugal’s World Cup opener against Germany he was keen to stress that he cannot win the tournament on his own. “I’m just here to help,” he insisted. “I can make a difference in some games but I can’t carry the team on my back.”

Five minutes into the second half of Monday’s Group G clash in Salvador, he tried to take on the entire German defence alone. Almost inevitably, he was quickly and easily dispossessed, allowing Joachim Low's men to break and engineer an opening for Mesut Ozil that really should have been taken. All the while, Ronaldo had remained on halfway, hands on hips, cheeks puffed out, clearly bemused by the futility of his efforts.

By that stage, Portugal were already 3-0 down. The game was over – and Ronaldo knew it. He had denied beforehand that he had anything to prove on the game’s grandest stage but there was no denying that he had arrived in Brazil intent on improving significantly upon a record of two goals from 48 previous shots on goal in World Cup competition. He was desperate to show the watching world what he was capable of. At Arena Fonte Nova, he did not get a chance to. Instead, Pepe decided to remind everyone what he is capable of – chronic indiscipline and staggering stupidity.

There can be no denying that Thomas Muller exaggerated the impact that Pepe’s flailing arm made upon his face as he challenged the defender for the ball just outside the Portugal penalty area. However, Pepe’s reaction to the Bayen Munich attacking midfielder’s theatrics was shocking – and yet unsurprising.

Quite why he elected to headbutt Muller as the ‘false nine’ was sitting on the turf is anyone’s guess.

His sadly all-too-predictable petulance deprived Portugal of any opportunity to turn the game around. He had not only let himself down – again – he had, criminally, let his country down.

And this from a player apparently reformed after a season at Real Madrid which passed largely without incident.

Ronaldo will also undoubtedly feel betrayed. Pepe is one of the senior members of the squad. He is a colleague at both international and club level. Ronaldo’s frustration was therefore understandable. As were his attempts to try to drag Portugal back into the game all by himself.

Speculative strikes from distance were always unlikely to yield dividends but Ronaldo had once again been reduced to the role of a one-man rescue operation.

He kept going forward but his frustration eventually boiled over 12 minutes from time. As Thomas Muller celebrated his hat-trick goal, Ronaldo was to be found on the touchline remonstrating with the fourth official over the referee’s failure to award Portugal a penalty for Benedikt Howedes’ challenge on Eder in the area.

His complaints proved in vain. Just like his efforts all game. As he himself said beforehand, “I don’t believe that one man makes a team.” That was made painfully clear to Portugal in Salvador on Monday afternoon.

 Thomas Muller scored a hat-trick as Germany thrashed 10-man Portugal 4-0 in their opening World Cup game.

Paulo Bento's side's chances of getting out of a tough Group G were placed in serious jeopardy as a Thomas Muller-inspired Germany put them to the sword in Salvador on Monday.
Muller - golden boot winner at the 2010 World Cup - continued his superb run at football's showpiece with a hat-trick, taking him to eight goals in seven appearances at the event.
On his 50th Germany appearance, the Bayern Munich man fired his side in front from the penalty spot before Mats Hummels doubled their advantage with a towering 32nd-minute header.
Pepe then tangled with the forward and headbutted him as he sat on the floor, before their woes were compounded by Muller's second on the stroke of half-time.
If Bento thought things could not get worse for his side, he was wrong, as defender Fabio Coentrao was taken off on a stretcher with a suspected groin injury in the second half.
And Muller sealed Germany's big win, capitalising on a Rui Patricio error to tap in with 12 minutes left.
And while the result was a serious statement of intent from Germany - who saw defender Hummels limp off with a late knee injury - Portugal were inexplicably bad, leaving them with an uphill battle to reach the last 16 with games against the USA and Ghana still to come.
Portugal's preparation was largely focused on Ronaldo, who has been plagued by thigh and knee problems in recent months, but he quickly proved his fitness with a sprint and strike at Germany goalkeeper Neuer after Miguel Veloso stripped Philipp Lahm of the ball.

Neuer's opposite number, Patricio, then gave Sami Khedira an excellent chance to open the scoring when he scuffed a horrendous clearance, but the midfielder saw his 40-yard snapshot curl agonisingly wide with the goalkeeper beaten.
Germany did not have to wait long to take the lead though, as Mario Gotze wriggled past Joao Pereira and was hauled down, allowing Muller to fire the resulting spot-kick into the bottom-left corner in the 12th minute.
Almeida limped off just before the half-hour mark, replaced by Eder, and they were soon two down when Hummels rose above Pepe and Bruno Alves to power a header past Patricio from Toni Kroos' outswinging corner.
There were still fleeting moments for Portugal fans to get excited about, as Nani broke well but missed Ronaldo with a pass, before Coentrao, perhaps surprised at finding himself on side, crossed for the talisman instead of shooting in a good position.
But Portugal's hopes quickly unravelled after Pepe's moment of madness.
The centre-back put a hand in the face of Muller as the pair both battled for the ball and the German appeared to make the most of the contact.
But Pepe's decision to push his head into a sitting Muller left referee Milorad Mazic with no choice but to send him off.
And there was still time for Germany to score again as Muller capped a truly miserable half for Bento's men.
Alves' attempted clearance hit Muller in second-half stoppage time, and the ball fell kindly for the forward, who pounced with a predatory left-foot finish that hit Patricio and went in.
Muller nodded over in the second half after an Ozil effort was saved, while at the other end Portugal's plight was summed up when Nani and Coentrao ran into each other inside Germany's penalty area.
Muller then wrapped up the victory, finding himself in the right place to tap in after Patricio spilled a routine cross from substitute Andre Schurrle to seal his treble.

Danial tergamam muncul juara

    Selepas satu-satu ujibakat di siaran-siaran televisyen,malah pemenang juga sdah ad kan? kpada sesape yg selalu mngikuti siaran langsung program realiti kanak-kanak Idola Kecil Ultra,mesti sdah thu peserta dari Tawau, Sabah iaitu Danial Cheur Hamasiah dinobatkan sebagai juara pada malam Sabtu lalu.

Bertempat di KL Live @ Live Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Danial, 13, yang juga pernah menjadi juara untuk Idola Kecil musim keenam tidak menyang­ka menewaskan tiga lagi rakannya iaitu Azzam, Balqis dan Harris.

Disiarkan secara langsung menerusi saluran TV9 pada jam 8.30 malam, Danial mendendang­kan lagu nyanyian asal Christina Aguilera iaitu Hurt dan sebuah lagu baru berjudul Sinar Pelangi yang turut menampilkan penyanyi Asmidar membawa pulang hadiah berupa wang tunai RM30,000 berserta trofi.

Selain hadiah berkenaan, Daniel berpeluang mendapat kontrak bernilai RM50,000 bersama The Talent Unit yang menerbit dan menguruskan kerjaya nyanyiannya pada selepas ini.

Ketika ditemui selepas rancangan selesai, Danial nyata terkejut dengan kemenangan kali keduanya itu kerana mengakui saingan daripada tiga peserta lain amat sengit pada malam kemuncak berkenaan.

“Saya memang tak sang­ka kerana kawan lain turut membuat persembahan yang hebat. Apabila diumumkan sebagai pemenang dan melihat gambar saya yang keluar di skrin, saya akui sangat terkejut kerana terlalu teruja untuk mengetahui keputusannya.

“Sedari awal menyertai IKU, saya melihat persai­ngan semua sengit-sengit belaka sehinggakan saya mula terfikir tidak apalah kalau tidak menang asalkan dapat bersama kawan berkongsi pengalaman me­nyertai pertandingan ini,” katanya.

Dia kini sedang bersekolah di Sekolah Seni Malaysia Kuala Lumpur yang terletak di Shah Alam bakal menukar aliran ke sekolah biasa bagi memberi tumpuan terhadap karier nyanyian selepas ini.

“Disebabkan sekolah saya sekarang sangat sibuk dan tiada masa untuk membuat latihan nyanyian saya terfikir untuk menukar ke sekolah biasa di sekitar Kuala Lumpur. Kebetulan pak cik menetap di Kuala Lumpur jadi tiada masalah untuk saya melakukan proses penukaran sekolah.

“Dengan ini lebih mudah untuk saya membahagikan masa di antara pelajaran dan kerjaya selepas ini,” katanya lagi.

IKU dicetuskan selepas kejayaan program realiti kanak-kanak Nombor Satu Malaysia, iaitu Idola Kecil yang sudah pun bersiaran selama enam musim di TV9 dan memperlihatkan persaingan 30 peserta terbaik menerusi musim terdahulu.

Tempat kedua menjadi milik Muhammad Azzamuddin Lop Hashim atau Azzam, 17, finalis daripada Idola Kecil musim ketiga.

Azzam mendendangkan lagu nyanyian asal Azlan & The Typewriter iaitu Kelibat dan sebuah lagu baru berjudul Dengar duet bersama Awi Rafael.

Manakala Harris Alif Rashidi atau Harris, 15, juara Idola Kecil musim ketiga terpaksa akur berada di tempat ketiga.

Harris mendendangkan lagu nyanyian asal John Legend, All of Me dan lagu baru berjudul Destinasi duet bersama Radhi dari kumpulan OAG.

Satu-satunya finalis perempuan iaitu Nor Balqis Ahmad Tajuddin atau Balqis, 15, daripada Idola Kecil ­musim ketiga berada di tempat terakhir.

Balqis mendendangkan lagu nyanyian asal Datuk Siti Nurhaliza berjudul Nirmala dan lagu baru iaitu Nyawa duet bersama Aepul.

Penjurian kali ini memperlihatkan 90 peratus daripada markah diadili oleh juri profesional iaitu Tomok, Akim Ahmad dan Elfira Loy manakala 10 peratus lagi diadili oleh peminat.

Dalam perkembangan sama, IKU turut menyampaikan Anugerah Idola Ultra kepada Azzam yang dipilih oleh peminat menerusi laman web TV9 sebelum pertandingan akhir bermula.

Program yang dihoskan oleh Aliff Satar itu turut menampilkan Encik Mimpi sebagai pe­nyanyi jemputan yang mendendang­kan lagu popularnya iaitu Rindukanlah.

Sementara itu, Pe­ngurus Besar TV9, Zurina Othman berkata, program berkenaan diwujudkan kerana tidak mahu mempersia-siakan bakat peserta daripada keenam-enam musim sekali gus memperlihatkan penerbitan IKU yang menyaksikan pertarungan antara 30 finalis terbaik sepanjang enam musim.

“Kami memang ada perancangan untuk menghasilkan IKU. Selepas melihat kejayaan Idola Kecil kami berusaha untuk mengekalkan prestasi program ini justeru dengan adanya IKU ia adalah kesempatan buat semua peserta Idola Kecil untuk terus menggilap bakat mereka.
